CSC

Researching the best scenarios to automate self-storage units

Context

When automating a self-storage unit, you want everything to run as automatically as possible. For CSC, we looked into possible solutions to achieve that goal.

CSC builds self-storage solutions to equip units with features that maximize their efficiency. These are often systems that are almost fully automated but still require human intervention at times. Although there are no automatic plug-and-play systems in the self-storage industry, Aaltra looked into alternative solutions and how they should work.

1

Client workshop

Empathy mapping our customers, figuring out together with client key issues, pains and gains. What opportunities can be implemented.

2

Location research

We went to Antwerp and Paris to study how competitors manage their operations. From initial registration to checkout, our strategists mapped out the entire user experience and customer journey.

3

Presenting our finding

We worked out the entire user flow and wrote a report to advise CSC with a strong technical case for automatic their self-storage.

LOCATION VISIT

We went to Antwerp and Paris to study how competitors manage their operations. From initial registration to checkout, our strategists mapped out the entire user experience. We mapped the user journey from initial consideration until opening the self-storage unit on site.

RESEARCH

Once on-site, we looked at how much is fully automated. What apps do you need to install? What hardware, technology and platforms do these companies use?

SCENARIOS

With that knowledge in mind, we worked out the entire user flow and wrote reports to advise CSC. We proposed two scenarios:

SCENARIO 1

Developing own solution

CSC develops its own solution using existing components. Making this hardware is expensive, so we researched which components CSC could combine to build their system.

SCENARIO 2

Using existing solution

We search for an existing solution that offers good value for money and allows CSC to retain data ownership. There is a plug & play system for self storage units, but it doesn't integrate well with other systems and the data is not your own, hence making it hard to stand out in a very competitive market.

OUTCOME

Based on this study, CSC has a strong technical case to develop an automated self-storage unit with an associated application. Aaltra suggested partners, gave a budget indication and worked on the technical architecture to move forward. Thanks to this, CSC could save up to 50% on automation costs compared to their existing solution.
